Random Musings – Motivation, TV, Bentos and More!

March 15, 2010 2 comments

So I’ve been kind of lax about posting lately, I know. Kingpotato has been working crazy hours at his job which kind of threw me into a wrench. It’s hard to adjust to coming home and having just the dog and cats to keep me company.

So, in Kingpotato’s absence I’ve been trying my hardest to keep myself motivated and not slack off. So I’ve been cleaning house, trying to keep up with bento and dinner menus and doing more exercise. I’ve actually used EA Active for (I think) the third time and I’m really starting to feel the burn! But despite the productivity, it’s even easier to fall into time wasting traps. For example:

I have now watched 2 episodes of “The Marriage Ref” which I have to say is fairly embarrasing. I don’t want to watch this show. I don’t like this show and the most recent episode with Ricky Gervais, Madonna and Larry David was downright uncofortable to watch. And yet, I finished the episode anyway. Fail. And yes, I just linked you to said uncomfortable episode, which is an even bigger fail.

After about three days of Netflix viewing, I am almost halfway through the entire 22 episode series of Earth 2.  It’s an interesting little sci-fi series that NBC picked up and promptly cancelled after just one season.  But at least it’s there for me to enjoy on Netflix.  It’s certainly got it’s quirks and there were some interesting choices made production wise.  It could be better, but it could also be a lot worse.  I remember watching it when it first came out as a kid, but we just never finished it.  Well, this time I’m gonna.

I’ve also been dreaming about bentos.  Yes, it’s a problem I have.  But I stumbled upon this great site Bento & Co. They have such lovely products I can’t stop looking at them.  The site is in French, but thanks to the magic of Google Translate I can read french.  I will definitely be making a purchase (or two or three…) as soon as I can scrounge up the money.  I’ll have to convert it to Euros, but it’s totally worth it.

Finally, as of today my cousin has (re)joined the blogging world.  So far she’s just written her mission statement, but I’m pretty excited to see what she posts.  She’s got a great sense of humor loves too cook and a pretty awesome writer.  Since some of her writing topics overlap with mine I’m sure I’ll find plenty of reasons to link her in the future.

So Far, So Good

January 8, 2009 Leave a comment

Well, if you’ve noticed on my Joe’s goals I’ve been pretty good about packing my gym bag and then actually getting my butt into the gym. Since December 31st, I have packed my gym bag 9 times and gone to the gym 6 times. I’m really happy with that!

I don’t know if it’s too early to be having more energy, but so far I think that I do. I’ve had more energy to get the kitchen cleaned up every evening and do some extra things around the apartment. When I come home, I actually want to keep doing things as opposed to just coming home sitting down and not moving for five and a half hours.

With the good momentum that Matthew and I have already built up, I am pretty confident that we’ll be able to keep this up for another week. I’m taking it one day at a time, but I think that another week of this is a good goal.

Starting after pay day (‘cuz we’re all broke from the holidays, right folks?) Christina and I are going to start going to Yoga twice a week also. I think the change of location from the gym will help keep me energized too. Plus, I love yoga. I feel so energized and centered when I am doing it regularly. I become so much more aware of my body, after just two classes I know my posture is better. I can’t wait to add a new layer to this!

Here’s to keeping up with the pace!

Altering Plans

January 4, 2009 1 comment

After about three days of trying to keep up with one very large and very important goal (exercise) and one very important very simple goal (writing), I’ve decided that trying to develop two habits at the same time is probably not the best way to go. When I was thinking of habits I wanted to develop, I thought that two would probably be too much, but I was ambitious – there was a brand new year staring me in the face, how could I not be? – and I took on what I now think was too much at once.

On Friday I did some serious thinking. My health really needs attention. I am not saying that I am sick or unhealthy, but I am certainly suffering from the “newlywed/new job/major move 40”. I have put on what I consider to be an unacceptable amount of weight and although I weighed less last year, I was certainly not living a healthy lifestyle and I have wanted to change this for several years now.

So, after thinking about it, I decided that health is what I need to focus on for my first habit. That means that my “pack your gym bag” habit will be the main focus for my first 30 days. I feel that I am being successful with this so far because I have already managed to go to the gym about 3 times in the past week which is a very good start, especially for me.

Writing is still a very important goal to me (I definitely feel that need to write on a regular basis and I really enjoy writing) so it will be my second focus this year. I want to develop my writing habit very badly, but I really need to develop healthy exercise and food habits now while I am still young so that I have many more (healthy) years in which to write. It is a sacrifice not to focus on something that I want so badly, but I can’t allow myself to be sidetracked or overwhelmed or I will fail at both. I still plan to write, but it won’t be the stringent “10 minutes a day” I had previously decreed. For now, until my health habit is strongly in place, I will just write what I can when I can.

I am hoping that I can create a new habit every month, but I also do not want to be too ambitious. I want to make sure that I feel very secure in my habits before I move on to the next one. I have a total of 12 habits I would like to build this year, but I think if I can just build 5 good habits this year, I will be successful.

I have created a Joe’s Goals page and will be putting a tracking chart on my main page so feel free to check back and see how my progress is going! Wish me luck 🙂

The Power of Less Challenge

December 29, 2008 Leave a comment

Leo Babauta the writer of Zen Habits, The Power of Less and some other blog I think I’m forgetting has issued a challenge to his readers.  He has set up a forum for us to hold ourselves accountable to start a new habit for 10 minutes a day.  The brilliance of this challenge is that we are only going to work on it for 30 days (for now) so that whatever we want to do will become a “habit”.

I’ve already headed on over to the forum and posted my personal goal and in the process picked up a second (but I vow not to take on more than that because I don’t want to be overwhelmed and then feel guilty).  Part of the challenge is encouragement to publically commit to our goals.  This is something that Leo has done and he raves about the positive support he gets from his readers.  I am hoping that any of you out there will be encouraged to take up your own challenge and to help me complete my own!

My goals:

1) Set up gym bag every day when I get home.  I am hoping that this simple goal will turn into a domino effect.  If I pack the bag, I’ll leave it by the door.  If I leave it by the door, I will see it on my way out every morning and remember to take it to work with me.  If I take it to work with me every morning, I will leave it in a visible place at my desk.  If I leave it visible at my desk I won’t forget to walk across the street and get some exercise.  I think I am going to put an inspirational message on the top of the bag that I will see every time I look at it and I’ve already started looking at and saving some photos that I want to use for inspiration so that I won’t forget what I am working towards.

2) Write something every day.  This may be a complete blog post, the start of a blog post, a little note in my personal journal, a made up story, anything.  I just need to get back in the habit of writing.

Well, my timer just rang, so day one is down for habit number one!  Habit number two will begin tomorrow.  Wish me luck!

I had a beautiful alone lunch today.  I love going to lunch with my friends and being social, but for the first time in a long time, everyone else was busy, so I had lunch alone.  I wrote down my thoughts while I ate and will share them very soon.  I was planning on doing it now, but my evening didn’t go quite as planned.  See Twitter logs below.

WinterBauval Yay! I’m off! I’m actually going to go to the gym. I think I will do the elliptical for 15 or 20 minutes.

WinterBauval Had to really fight through the last 5 minutes of my workout, but I made it for 20 minutes. Yay me!!

WinterBauval Got on what I thought was the 0 north. Yeah it was the 10 going east. Damnit!! Shit!! Oh well. At least I got more exercise.

WinterBauval Made it home. Finally. I don’t want to do that again. I’m exhausted and starving. And out of shape 😦

WinterBauval My husband is awesome. He brought me Chipotle. Ah, I love my husband.

So yeah, that’s right.  I got on the wrong bus after I left the gym.  I got off as soon as I realized but I had to walk half a mile to get back on the right route.  This was after working out for 20 minutes.  I haven’t worked out in weeks and I have never had a regular exercise routine.  I am out. of. shape.  So my whole body is sore.  The chipotle helped with the hunger, but now the aches and pains are catching up.  The evening ended well because I got dinner taken care of.  Ugh.  My body hurts typing this.  Time for bed.
